On November 6, 2026, the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) required New Cordell Utility Authority to inform users of its drinking water to boil water for at least one minute before consumption due to E. coli contamination. The DEQ also advised against giving water to infants under six months, even when boiled, due to elevated nitrate concentrations in the water system.

Users will be notified when the water is considered safe for human consumption, as federal law mandates notification when a public water supply exceeds certain maximum contaminant levels.

Boil Order Issued for New Cordell Utility Authority

The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has required New Cordell Utility Authority, located in Washita County, to inform users of its drinking water to use water that has been brought to a full, rolling boil for at least one minute, bottled water, or water from another acceptable source for consumption, use in food preparation, dishwashing and brushing teeth. This order was issued due to E. coli in the drinking water.

Due to the history of elevated nitrate concentrations in the water system, DO NOT GIVE WATER TO INFANTS, EVEN WHEN THE WATER HAS BEEN BOILED. Infants below the age of six months who drink nitrates in excess of the maximum contaminant limit could become seriously ill and, if untreated, may die. Symptoms include shortness of breath and blue baby syndrome. If symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately. Water, juice, and formula for children under six months of age should not be prepared with tap water. Bottled water or other water low in nitrates should be used for infants until further notice.

Users will be notified when the water is considered safe for human consumption. Federal law requires that consumers be notified when a public water supply exceeds certain maximum contaminant levels and might be harmful to the health of consumers.
